Livingston School District hit by a ransomware attack

Livingston School District in New Jersey is the last victim of a ransomware attack that caused a two hour delayed opening.

Students at the Livingston public school district in New Jersey are undoubtedly happy for a two hour delayed opening tomorrow.

A new ransomware attack hit a school district in the US, the malware has infected systems at the Livingston public school district in New Jersey causing a delay in the opening.

According to Bleeping Computer that first reported the news, the infection took place on November 21, 2019.

“As you know, our servers have been down since yesterday.  Today, we had an outside security company do a full assessment of our systems.  Based upon what they found, we can now confirm that our servers were hacked by an outside entity and infected with Ransomware, which is designed to encrypt data.” reads an email sent to parents on Friday and obtained by BleepingComputer. “We are confident that this entity is NOT associated with the Livingston Community or the Livingston Public Schools,”

At the time, the school district did not disclose details of the incident like the family of ransomware involved or the way hackers breached its systems.

According to the Livingston school district, the school’s data has not been stolen by the hackers.

“Our understanding is that these criminals do not typically steal data, but rather render the systems unusable”

The school district has reported the incident to law enforcement and it hired a security firm to investigate the incident.

The good news is that the school district has already restored most of the operations, normal phone system and Genesis Parent Access Portal are still down.

In September, the Wolcott school district was hit by ransomware attack for the second time in four month.

Earlier in August, for the second time in a few days, Houston County Schools in Alabama delayed the school year’s opening due to a malware attack.

In the same period, several schools of Louisiana were also targeted by hackers ahead of year’s beginning. The AP press reported that a fourth Louisiana school district, Tangipahoa Parish, is assessing damages caused by a cyberattack that its computer network.
